چکیده

We present the results of numerical experiments designed to evaluate the usefulness of near-infrared luminosity functions for constraining the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of young stellar populations. We test the sensitivity of the near-infrared K band luminosity function (KLF) of a young stellar cluster to variations in the underlying IMF, star forming history, and pre-main sequence mass-to-luminosity relations. Using Monte Carlo techniques, we create a suite of model luminosity functions systematically varying each of these basic underlying relations. From this numerical modeling, we find that the luminosity function of a young stellar population is considerably more sensitive to variations in the underlying initial mass function than to either variations in the star forming history or assumed pre-main-sequence (PMS) mass-to-luminosity relation. Variations in a cluster’s star forming history are also found to produce significant changes in the Smithsonian Predoctoral Fellow present address: Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden Street, Mail Stop 42, Cambridge, MA 02138 USA

Star formation in the Vela molecular clouds IV. Young embedded star clusters towards D-cloud class I sources

We study the association between embedded star clusters and young stellar objects believed to be precursors of intermediate mass stars (2 <∼ M <∼ 10 M ), within the Vela Molecular Ridge D-cloud. A sample of 12 IRAS-selected Class I sources belonging to the region was imaged in the near infrared bands JHK and the photometry used in order to gain information on the stellar population around these...

Luminosity Functions of Young Clusters: Modeling the Substellar Mass Regime

We predict near-infrared luminosity functions of young (5 Myr to 1 Gyr) star clusters by combining evolutionary models of very low-mass (1 MJ to 0.15 M ) dwarfs with empirical bolometric corrections. We identify several characteristic features in our results. These can be attributed to three causes: (1) deuterium burning in the most massive substellar objects; (2) methane absorption in bodies w...

The Initial Mass Functions of Four Embedded Stellar Clusters

We present near-infrared J , H , and K images of four embedded stellar clusters in the Galaxy. We find a significant fraction of pre-main-sequence stars present in at least one of the clusters. For the clusters dominated by main-sequence stars, we determine the initial mass function (IMF) both by using the K luminosity function and a global extinction correction and by deriving individual extin...

The K s - band Luminosity and Stellar Mass Functions of Galaxies in z ∼ 1 Clusters

We present the near-infrared (Ks-band) luminosity function of galaxies in two z ∼ 1 cluster candidates, 3C336 and Q1335+28. A third cluster, 3C289, was observed but found to be contaminated by a foreground system. Our wide field imaging data reach to Ks=20.5 (5σ), corresponding to ∼M +2.7 with respect to the passive evolution. The near-infrared luminosity traces the stellar mass of a galaxy due...

The fading of young stellar populations and the luminosity functions of dwarf, irregular and starburst galaxies

Dwarf, irregular and infrared-luminous starburst galaxies are all known to have “steep” luminosity functions with faint-end behavior roughly φ(L) ∝ L−1.8. This form is exactly what is expected if the luminosities of these objects fade with time as L ∝ t−1.3, because the objects spend more time at low luminosities than high, even if they form with a wide range of initial masses. Models of young ...
